In his effort to clean up the city, clamp down on crime and vice, mayor Jean Drapeau managed to push by-law #2223 prohibiting pinball machines in public spaces as of May 1st, 1955. They were considered gambling machines and corrupted youth. By-law #2229 a few days later clarified the definition of what these machines were, covering pinballs, bingos and bagatelles. It was repealed in 1977 with by-law #5156, and there was also Bill C-71 at the federal level. Even then, pinball was restricted to those at least 18 years old, and in amusement halls, which had a specific definition. In 2016 the North Star machine à piastres bar opened with 10 pinball machines, and in 2017 the law was officially off the books, making the way for barcades in the city.

So here are some movies showing what Montreal arcades looked like in the days without pinball. Most of these were found on Saint Lawrence boulevard A.K.A. The Main, now labelled as Boulevard Saint-Laurent, a bit South of Saint Catherine Street where the Montreal Pool Room, Playland restaurant, Frites Dorées (Silver Amusements), Midway Tavern, Crystal Palace Theatre, the adult Eve Theatre, and a few billiard halls were found. Formerly this area was part of the Red-light district, home to cabarets, gambling, illicit taverns and prostitution, but that was all cleaned up by the early 60s.
Ladies And Gentlemen... Mr. Leonard Cohen (Canada, 1965)

Directed by Donald Brittain & Don Owen, and can be watched for free on the NFB website.

There's a brief snippet around 39 minutes in of Leonard Cohen in an arcade. One can see the address in the window, which is 1204 Saint Lawrence boulevard. It was listed in Lovell's 1964 Annual as the Playland Restaurant, formerly Main Gameland Amusements which opened about 1957, and then the place was vacant by '65-66.

Most of the games are too hard to make out given what we can see of the row of machines, but from left to right : Champion Baseball (Genco, 1955) bat game, unknown, Deluxe Shooting Gallery (Midway, 1961), and a few more unknowns...
There's a quick sequence wherein Cohen's playing a rifle game called Bonus Gun (United, 1955), and to the left of him is a Vanguard (Williams 1959), a gun game "that pops rubber balls into the air completing bingo style patterns"...
("Last week not far from the bridge") A short film directed by Guy Bergeron. It can be watched on the imdb website. It's in French, but there's actually very little dialog.

Some of the action takes place in a snack bar at the address 1951 de Montigny East (which later became de Maisonneuve East), corner of Dorion street, very close to the titular bridge, i.e. the Jacques-Cartier, which crosses the Saint Lawrence river and joins the island of Montreal to the South Shore.

Here we can spot a United Avalon shuffle alley bowler (United Amusement Co., 1962), a 1962 World Series (Williams, 1962) baseball / bat game, and a Circus Rifle Gallery (Genco, 1957)...

Montreal Main (Canada, 1974)

Director: Frank Vitale, starring: Frank Vitale, Allan Moyle, Stephen Lack, Peter Brawley...

Allan "Bozo" Moyle would go on to direct The Rubber Gun (1977) featuring several of the same people, and later wrote and directed Pump Up The Volume (1990).

There are a couple of scenes shot in the Frites dorées / Silver Amusements arcade/restaurant at 1212 Saint Lawrence blvd., probably in 1973. Steamed hot dogs, fries and amusement machines like baseball / bat games, hockey, rifle / gun games, driving games, fortune/horoscope, crane, photomat, etc.

Frites Dorées / Silver Amusements existed from about 1951 to the mid-80s when the place became New Frites Dorées (and I guess got rid of the arcade machines). Then about 2008, that whole section on the West side with the exception of strip/dance club Café Cléopâtre got knocked down to make way for the Carré Saint-Laurent development project, although the Montreal Pool Room moved across the street.

The gang enters the place. There's the Frites dorées sign on top, Silver Amusements painted on the windows, and FRITES DOREES inlaid on the sidewalk...
As they enter, we can spot a Vitalizer "Foot Ease" Electricity Circulation Stimulator Floor Machine (Exhibit Supply Co., c. 1941), a couple of gumball machines no doubt made in Canada by Beaver Machine Corp., and a Solar Horoscope and Forecast (Peerless Vending, 1950s?) "grandma" type fortune teller machine...

The scene is shot hand-held and moves around a lot. Moyle plays a Drag Races (Allied Leisure, 1971) driving game and barely visible to the left of him is a Drive-Mobile (International Mutoscope, 1941) and two more movie viewers [not seen in this particular screen capture] which can be better seen in the next movie, Vie d'ange, detailed later in this post...
Here's a look at the hockey game I could not identify. One can piece together "Stadium" printed on it, and it has solid 3D, not thin metal 2D players and a little ball instead of a puck. The closest I could find is something like Hockey Champ by Chicago Coin, 1968, but that's not it.

Vie d'ange (Canada, 1979)

Director: Pierre Harel, starring: Paule Baillargeon, Pierre Harel, Jean-Guy Moreau...

Shot in 1974, but only released 5 years later. Probably one of the craziest & most outrageous Canadian films ever made. Harel joined the Quebecois blues-rock group Offenbach early in their career, convincing them to sing in Quebecois French, writing one of their biggest tunes, "Câline de blues", and later founded the Quebec rock group Corbeau in 1977.

There's a scene shot at Frites dorées / Silver Amusements, about a year after Montreal Main, and a few of the same machines are still there!

From left to right, this bunch of machines were also spotted in Montreal Main, like the unknown fortune teller, a 3D Movies (Capitol Projector Corp, 1950s), two Pin-Up Movies mutoscopes (Capitol Projector Corp., 1947) or the reissued Midget Movie Theater (Exhibit Supply, 1962) , and a Drive-Mobile (International Mutoscope, 1941)...
Director: Mike Cartel (as Michael Cartel), starring: Mike Cartel, Al Valletta, Seeska Vandenberg...

An action comedy horror movie written, directed & starring Mike Cartel. Low-budget, bad acting, weak plot, and never really delivers on the promise of this description I found on imdb: "Two dorky Nevada worm wranglers are kidnapped by a gang of beautiful women as part of a plot to steal plutonium from the Mafia."

There is a bar scene with pinball machines, a jukebox, a mirror ball, and the two main characters get into a fight amongst them.

Oblivious to the fighting, there's a girl playing Suspense (Williams, 1969) the whole time...

Just before this mean-looking guy punches out the main character, we can see the reflection of two machines in the mirror behind the bar, and these may be the Night Rider and Power Play seen a bit later...

The punch throws him into a 1976 Seeburg Sunstar jukebox, which starts playing (slightly earlier, we see a girl drop a coin and make a selection, but it fails to turn on)...

Another punch is thrown in front of a Night Rider (Bally, 1976) EM version, and a Power Play (Bally, 1978)... these are quite possibly the machines seen reflected in the behind-the-bar mirror in the still above...

The other main character is seen near a Drop-A-Card (Gottlieb, 1971)...

These were photos taken during a movie's production that would be displayed in the lobby or window of a movie theatre, or used as promotional material for the movie.
These were not simply frames from the movie and duplicated, but rather photos taken by an on-set photographer A.K.A. unit still photographer. Their photos were used for promotion of the movie as well as for continuity in wardrobe, set and background appearance. Thus what you see in those photos is not what you might get in the movie...

Ich - Ein Groupie A.K.A. Higher and Higher (Switzerland/Germany, 1970)
Directors: Erwin C. Dietrich (as Fred Williams), Peter Baumgartner (uncredited). Starring: Ingrid Steeger, Rolf Eden, Vivian Weiss...

I stumbled upon this lobby card photo of a guy playing a Shangri-La (Williams, 1967)...

But the scene in the movie is this...

Just before this shot, there is a one of the ball rolling on the playfield, but super out of focus. Of course, with the sounds, one can deduce that it's a pinball machine, but otherwise it's pretty abstract...

Later in the film, Ingrid and a suitor are in a jazz club and as they walk out, we can spot a machine in the corner on the left... a Discotek (Bally, 1965)...

Air Raid Wardens (USA, 1943)
Director: Edward Sedgwick. Starring: Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Edgar Kennedy...

I stumbled upon this photo of Laurel & Hardy next to this Follies of 1940 (Genco, 1939) machine...

However, in that scene in the movie, the shot is much tighter, and one barely sees the machine, and in fact, probably would not have even guessed that there was one there, had one not been looking for it and armed with the above lobby card photo...

(Thanks to the Laurel and Hardy Central for helping identify the movie the lobby card photo was from!)

BTW, Laurel and Hardy appear in the artwork of two pinball machines...
Fast Company (USA, 1953)
Director: John Sturges. Starring: Howard Keel, Polly Bergen, Marjorie Main...

UPDATE March 20, 2022 : When I first made this post, I was wondering if this was another case of "lobby card lies". Well, I finally saw this movie, and in fact, it is not another case.
I think the machine is a Merry Widow (Genco, 1948)... it has flippers but in the non-modern arrangement, so that would place it somewhen between late 1947 and 1950, inclusively)...

Here is the comparison shot from the movie. I think pretty obviously that the still shot was not a frame from the film, but staged, but almost from the same point of view of the film camera. The film made me realize that the man is leaning against another machine.

In fact, in a scene shortly after, we can spot that second machine on the right, with his hat on it, and a bit of the backglass, but too tough to identify at this low resolution.

.

James Schidlowskyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02265531597498111078noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5292716427923631267.post-62916574023775601612018-03-13T09:04:00.000-04:002018-03-13T09:04:02.276-04:00Dogfight (USA, 1991)Dogfight (USA, 1991). Director: Nancy Savoca, starring River Phoenix, Lili Taylor, Richard Panebianco, Brendan Fraser...

The movie set in 1963, the day before President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. River plays a soldier about to be shipped out...

He and his buddies have some fun an arcade... River's playing a Gigi (Gottlieb, 1963), which is a slight anachronism, since it came out in December...
Behind him, there is a row of mutoscopes ("movie" viewers, but using a lot of stills, like a large flip-it book) e.g. the black one on the left is a Mutoscope "clam shell" model D, made between late 1890s to about 1909. His buddy is by a Cockeyed Circus (Exhibit Supply Company, 1941), and to the right is a baseball / bat game 10th Inning (Williams, 1964), another anachronism...
Elsewhere in the arcade is a Super Circus Rifle Gallery (Chicago Coin, 1969) yet another anachronism, and a Carnival Gun (United, 1954), and a Mr. Top Gun (Taylor, 1960-1975) shootout game with life-size cowboy (different models of cowboy existed)...
Words are exchanged between the army guys and the navy guys. When the fight breaks out, we can see a row of machines, some of which I could not identify... (from left to right)...
1. ?, 2. ?, 3. ?, 4. Gigi (Gottlieb, 1963), 5. a wall game?, 6. Fast Ball (Williams, 1969) anachronism, 7. Swing-Along (Gottlieb, 1963), 8. an old woodrail, maybe even flipperless, and 9. Hollywood (Williams, 1961), where we can now see a bit of the "Styling of the 60's" cabinet (anodized aluminum trim and tapered tubular chromium steel legs)...

Oh yeah, on the left is an Uncle Sam strength-tester (possibly made by Caille Brothers, circa 1908, or maybe a reproduction).

In a later scene, River revisits the arcade with Lili and they play Whac-A-Mole (Creative Engineering, Inc., 1976). This is another anachronism. Mysteriously, I could not find any photos of the game that match this backglass and score reel type...

Towards the end of the movie, River is back from his tour of duty, it's 1966, and he walks into a themed bar called Circus, which has a Circus (Bally, 1973) , yet another pinball anachronism...

Also of note in this movie, there is a scene with a room full of antique coin-operated music machines from the late 19th century to the 1920s or 30s. There are mechanically-animated animal orchestras, a Regina Hexaphone, J.P. Seeburg Electric player piano, etc. Since the film was set and partly shot in San Francisco, perhaps these were from the Musee Mechanique?

Thanks to Ruby for spotting this one. A scene in the Bonanza arcade shows the juvenile delinquent Kelly playing air hockey for money.

In the background on the right may be a few more amongst some other arcade games, but too they are hard to make out. There is a racing car game which looks much like a Gran Trak 10 (Atari, 1974), but the side of the cabinet has been repainted a solid color instead of the stencil art, and the front art doesn't quite match either...

The man loses and Kelly tries to hit on a girl playing a wedgehead pinball. The complete lineup is Paul Bunyan (Gottlieb, 1968) (just a bit of the backbox side), Bali-Hi (Bally, 1970), Big Indian (Gottlieb, 1974), Gulfstream (Williams, 1973), Fun-Fest (Williams, 1973), and the girl is playing a Flip A Card (Gottlieb, 1970)...

Bali-Hi is apparently a rare game, with only 80 units ever made, however, it can also be spotted in an episode of The Rockford Files ("Dirty Money, Black Light", season 3, 1977).

Director: Richard Linklater, starring: Billy Bob Thornton, Greg Kinnear, Marcia Gay Harden...

For whatever reasons, they decided to remake this classic. The air-hockey battle/bet has been "modernized" to a skateboard battle, but since it was directed by our pinball-loving friend Linklater, he managed to squeeze in a couple of pinball machines, although they are only onscreen for less than 3 seconds.

From left to right, Kiss (Bally, 1979), Skateball (Bally, 1980), and another that I can't identify because the girl is blocking most of it...
A disappointing movie, but the director's love of pinball shines once again with this lineup of very classic machines in beautiful condition, including Black Knight (Williams, 1980), Gorgar (Williams, 1979), Lost World (Bally, 1978), Space Invaders (Bally, 1980), Kiss (Bally, 1979), and Capt. They are White Lightning (1973) and Gator (1976)...

There are flippers, but he doesn't seem to use them much, preferring to nudge the machine like in the days before flippers.

Skeeter: Just can't beat one of these Sears-Roebuck pinball machines, no siree!
Sheriff Connors: You gotta hit the flippers there once a while.
Skeeter: I hit the flippers all the time!

Sears-Roebuck may possibly have distributed Gottlieb pinball machines. The only info I could find on this is that they sold a bagatelle table called "Happi Time" in the 1930s.

Gator (USA, 1976)
Director: Burt Reynolds. Starring: Burt Reynolds, Jack Weston, Lauren Hutton, Jerry Reed...
Scene 1: Southside Shuffle Disco... Jerry Reed goes in to collect his protection money and we can spot a couple of pinball machines in the background: on the left is a Pot 'O' Gold (Williams, 1965) [although the cabinet might not be right.] On the right is a Playtime (Chicago Coin, 1968)...

On the right of the image, there seems to be an arcade game, which at the time would likely be a car-racing type or a rifle/shooting type?

Scene 2: Hard-Hearted Hannah's. Reed shows Reynolds the ropes on collection. We can spot an animal-themed pitch & bat game, Target Gallery (Midway, 1962).

Not getting the results he wanted, i.e. cash, Reed decides to take out the place's Wurlitzer 3700 - Americana jukebox (Wurlitzer, 1972/73)...

Director: Richard Rush. Starring: Peter O'Toole, Steve Railsback, Barbara Hershey...

The film's director talks about the opening credit sequence which is a chain of seemingly innocuous little events, each one leading to the next and that eventually bring us to the introduction of the main character.

The credits are still going when we spot the pinball machine, and in the director's commentary on the film he says "The random bumping of the balls, like random events in life, striking each other, being the cause of other events, kind of a definition of fate. Very topically correct for the film."...

While the guy is playing, a friend walks by and comments: "Hey, Morton! Is your ass attached to that machine? You wiggle it, that's gonna make ball go where you want it to, huh?!"

Then there's a shot with an anxious man in the foreground watching the cops walk into the place, and we see the whole pinball machine, which is a Fireball (Bally, 1971)...

Not a very good movie. Early days for a couple of actresses who went on to become more famous.

There's a scene in the house of the "rich enemy girl", wherein she's playing pool with her father in the game room. We can spot an Old Chicago (Bally, 1976)...
There are also some slot machines (the two on the right might be manufactured by O.D. Jennings & Co.)...
Here are a few, in chronological order...

Black Angel (USA, 1946)
Director: Roy William Neill. Stars: Dan Duryea, June Vincent, Peter Lorre, Broderick Crawford...

Two flipperless and headless machines. Flippers arrived in 1947, i.e. after this movie was released, and headless machines were pretty much over by the later 30s, in favor of backboxes with illuminated backglasses. However, these are too tough to identify without more clues. For example, for 1935 alone, ipdb lists 309 machines from 54 different manufacturers!

Criss Cross (USA, 1949)
Director: Robert Siodmak. Stars: Burt Lancaster, Yvonne De Carlo, Dan Duryea...

There's a flipperless and headless pinball machine, and the cabinet artwork looks like one of the ones in the above-mentioned Black Angel, as well as The Man with the Golden Arm (1955) (see this post) and it could well be the exact same machine. e.g. the set dressers ask for an old pinball machine and this is what they have in their props department...
Brain (Harry Dean Stanton) rescues the POTUS (Donald Pleasence). In the corner is a very old flipperless pinball machine, which is an Oklahoma (United, 1944), with a repainted cabinet. The machine was already about 36 years old when the movie was shot, and the movie is set in the "future" of 1997, so it's pretty odd to see a machine like this.
Based on the famous chess match for the World Championship which happened in 1972 in Reykjavík, Iceland. It's still the Cold War, and American chess player Bobby Fischer plays against the Soviet Union's Boris Spassky in a tense match.

This is another example of pinball anachronism, since the machine was made 5 years after the event depicted in the movie.

One would expect pinball machines to be rather rare in Iceland due to high import duties and its remote location. Pretty much all of them were brought in for R & R purposes by the US military when they maintained a base there (so it's a little doubtful that one would be in a bar as depicted in this movie). Nowadays there are only about 60 machines in the entire country. Here's a little article about Keeping pinball alive in the land of fire and ice.

Director: Jack Smight. Stars: Paul Newman, Lauren Bacall, Julie Harris, Janet Leigh, Robert Wagner...

Newman plays Harper, a private investigator who gets embroiled in a case and meets some crazy people. His character is a little bit of an S.O.B., tough, but loses some fights, quite witty and very entertaining to watch.

In some joint, he pumps a waitress for information next to a pinball machine...

He then talks to the barman, and finally asks for some dimes, walks over to the pinball machines -- Cross Country (Bally, 1963) and Go-Cart (Keeney, 1963) -- sticks his gum under a table, but before he's able to coin one of them up, he hears a cop car screech in and he goes to hide in the restroom to avoid them...
Although this blog is not about jukeboxes, this one was intriguing and easy enough to identify, so why not... At one point Harper ends up in a bar trying to get some info from Shelley Winters. We can spot a 1963 Rowe/AMI JAL model jukebox with a cool little animation thing (here's a fuzzy animated GIF showing that a bit)...
Not-quite Pinball Bonus:

Nine years later, they made a sequel called The Drowning Pool (USA, 1975) and Harper embarks on another adventure. It was directed by Stuart Rosenberg and starred Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Anthony Franciosa, Melanie Griffith...

There's a scene in a bar where Harper talks to Richard Jaeckel and in the background, blurry, I believe is a pinball machine, but of course, too hard to identify. There appears to be a jukebox as well, again, too blurry to identify...

No Pinball Bonus:

Paul Newman also starred in The Hustler (USA,1961) which features several pool halls. There are no pinballs, but there are some interesting coin-operated machines...

Intro scene has an All-Star Deluxe Bowler (Bally, 1958)...

In a later scene in a bus station, we can spot a Deluxe Short-Stop (Williams, 1958) baseball (with part of cabinet painted over in a solid color), a rifle / gun game that looks like a Crossfire (Williams, 1956) and a Ten Strike (or Ten Pins), (Williams, 1957), a two-player, mechanically-animated manikin bowling game...

In the rest rooms, we can spot a Zodiac fortune teller / horoscope machine. It appears to be an "Astroscope", made by Crabb Manufacturing circa 1939. I spotted this machine before, in Dazed And Confused (USA, 1993), see this post...
Director: Bob Swaim. Stars: Nathalie Baye, Philippe Léotard, Richard Berry, Tchéky Karyo...

A gritty crime story in a rough Parisian neighbourhood. After one of the cop's major informants ("balance" in French) is murdered, they go after the crime boss who is responsible and stop at nothing. They put pressure on a streetwalker (Baye) and her boyfriend (Léotard) who used be her pimp and work for the boss, and try to get them to inform on the boss.

We can spot a Devil's Dare (Gottlieb, 1982) through the window as the cops give Baye a hard time...

Later in a café we can see a bit of a Barcrest "Amabassadeur" slot machine with the boss' henchman/psycho Tchéky Karyo about to get nasty...

In one scene, five cops drag Léotard into a noisy busy arcade and work on him a bit. The camera pans by a row of machines and punks... we can spot Devil's Dare (Gottlieb, 1982), Black Hole (Gottlieb, 1981) (European model with no infinity mirror lights in backbox)...

The camera pans along, passing a 1970s Kasco Clay Shooting rifle game...

Finally the camera finds where the gang of cops have Léotard cornered, where we can spot a bunch of video games including Namco/Midway's Galaxian (or its sequel, Galaga), King Kong, and Pac-Man, and he's got his back against an Armor Attack (Cinematronics, 1980)...

Here in this café, we can spot a Rock-Ola 463 jukebox (1976) on the left, and a glimpse of a Barcrest Ambassadeur slot machine...

Bonus connections:
At the police station, there are a few movie posters, one of which is for The Enforcer (1976) with Clint Eastwood, which has a brief pinballspotting (see this post).

Also in the streets outside of a movie theatre, there's a poster of The Hunter (1980), which also had some pinballspottings (see this post).

In Tchao Pantin (1983), another French film set in a gritty part of town around the same time period, we also saw a Barcrest Ambassadeur slot machine as well as a Devil's Dare pinball machine... see this post.

Director: John Landis. Stars: John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Carrie Fisher, John Candy...

Pure gold comedy classic with Belushi and Aykroyd expanding their characters from a Saturday Night Live sketch into a feature-length film. A fun ride (whilst being chased by cops) and filled with great funny lines. The list of musical talent in cameo and supporting roles is unbelievable... Cab Calloway, James Brown, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, John Lee Hooker, etc. etc.

In the scene where the Blues Brothers invade Bob's Country Bunker (where they have both types of music: country and western), we can spot several machines...

As Jake and Elwood Blues first walk in, they pass by a jukebox that resembles a Seeburg V200 (1955-6)...

Then they pass pinball 3 machines... from left to right: a 4 Square (Gottlieb, 1971) wedgehead, a Monte Carlo (Bally, 1972) and a Blue Chip (Williams, 1976)...
The famous chicken-wire fronted stage, flanked on both sides by a pinball machine. The one on the left is too hard to make out. The one on the right is a wedgehead, which I'm pretty sure is a Buccaneer (Gottlieb, 1976)...
During the set, Bob expresses his appreciation for the "The Good Ol' Blues Brothers Boys Band" whilst his patrons play the 4 Square and Monte Carlo machines seen earlier. On the wall is a warning to minors about a $500 fine, which, if it's for playing pinball, seems pretty steep...
A young German fresh out of college hitch-hikes to Paris and meets up with a lovely American girl, who he ends up following to Ibiza, where they live a hedonistic lifestyle in the sun and eventually become heroin addicts. Of course, the main reason I watched this was because Pink Floyd did the music for it.

Anyway, before meeting the girl, he befriends a guy in a café, who plays a few games of Ship-Mates (Gottlieb, 1964)...
Director: Herbert Ross. Stars: Woody Allen, Diane Keaton, Tony Roberts...

Great comedy based on Woody's play wherein he gets love advice from an apparition of Humphrey Bogart, and there are several references to Bogie's films, especially of course Casablanca.

Woody and his cute date go into a questionable bar and some bikers are beside a couple of wedgeheads... a Central Park (Gottlieb, 1966) and a Cross Town (Gottlieb, 1966)...

There are two versions of Bottle Rocket... the original short, and the feature-length one released two years after. Both have a scene where they play pinball, but not the same machine or location...
There's a scene where Anthony's playing a Diner (Williams, 1990) whilst Dignan talks about the money they'll get fencing the stuff they just robbed...

A repainted / re-themed Gottlieb wedgehead pinball machine is onboard their vessel. There is no shot of the playfield, so all we have to go on is the cabinet. Based on the style of coin door with the embossed circle and sticker, it is from late 1976 onwards... but it looks like they didn't repaint the backbox nor the front of the cabinet, which matches that of Team One (Gottlieb, 1977).
More Bonus:

Wes Anderson designed the interior of an Italian café, the Bar Luce in Milan, including two re-themed Gottlieb wedgehead pinball machines. One of them has a Steve Zissou theme, but is not the same one depicted in the movie (because the latter had a design painted on the side of the cabinet, whereas this one is plain, plus this one has an earlier model split door)...
Director: Don Siegel. Stars: Clint Eastwood, Lee J. Cobb, Susan Clark, Don Stroud...

This movie is sortof the missing link between his westerns and Dirty Harry-type stuff. He plays an Arizona (desert scene, like in his westerns) cop who is sent New York (the big city) to extradite a prisoner. The latter escapes and Harry, I mean Coogan encounters various members of the crime element and some hippies along the way trying to find him.

Hippie-chick Tisha Sterling takes Clint into a pool hall, and a fight ensues... we can spot a couple of pretty old machines. Here in the corner is a Thing (Chicago Coin, 1951) machine...

Bonus:
Bronco Billy (USA, 1980)
Director: Clint Eastwood. Stars: Clint Eastwood, Sondra Locke, Geoffrey Lewis, Scatman Crothers...

As Clint and his gang walk out out of some joint, we can spot a bowling machine, a “Sunstar” jukebox (Seeburg, 1976) and a 4-player pinball machine, which appears to be Strato-Flite (Williams, 1974)...

Bonus II:
The Enforcer (USA, 1976). Third installment of the Dirty Harry series. Whilst he plays pool, there’s a glimpse of a Big Indian (Gottlieb, 1974) and a Spin-A-Card (Gottlieb, 1969)...

Bonus II Part 2: Also, in the fourth Dirty Harry film, Sudden Impact (USA, 1983), there’s a scene in a bar and we can hear the classic chimes of a machine being played in the background, but we never see it. Pinballhearing? No, that’s not a thing!

TILT.
Director: Richard Franklin. Stars: Stacy Keach, Jamie Lee Curtis, Killer (the dingo)...

I can’t say it’s a great film, but it’s classic Keach, if you know what that means. An Australian film, definitely shot there, but the two main stars are American. Anyway, Keach plays trucker Pat Quid with a pet dingo, trying to haul a load of “Meat! M. E. A. T. as in meat!” to Perth but along the way suspects a van driver on the same route is a serial killer.

At a truck stop in Yellowdine along the Great Eastern Highway, he calls up the police and tries to explain his theory about the killer, but gets embroiled by questions and having to spell out his name (and what he’s hauling, which is where the above meat quote comes in) whilst the most unfriendly locals in the place most unhelpfully make noise playing a jukebox and pinball. The machine is obviously a Playboy (Bally, 1979)...

The scene is pretty cool because the camera does a slow 360 pan of the place whilst he’s on the phone and the locals are playing pool, buying stuff from the vending machine etc. According to the trivia on IMDB, the studio wanted the director to cut that scene, feeling it was too slow, but I’m glad he didn’t.

The jukebox is pretty cool, with a round infinity mirror built in. It’s a Seeburg 100-78D “Celestia” circa 1977-79 (or a 100-79M “Celestia” by Seeburg-Stern 1979-80)...
Director: Irving Pichel. Stars: Mickey Rooney, Jeanne Cagney, Peter Lorre, Barbara Bates...

Rooney makes one stupid decision after another. To impress his date (Jeanne Cagney), he’s gotta have cash, so he borrows money from the cash register where he works... of course things go wrong, and get worse and worse...

In the diner where Jeanne works we can spot an aviation-themed pinball...

Rooney and Jeanne go for some pinball, and we can spot a Big Hit (Exhibit, 1946) partially visible on the left, and a Ballerina (Bally, 1948) that she plays...
Jeanne Cagney wins a payout after one ball (she knows the trick because she used to work at the arcade)... “Hey Nick! Pay me! I hit the jackpot.” Lorre begrudgingly comes over...

He pays her, but then puts an “Out of Order” sign on it saying “That’s all for you.”...

Later there’s a reverse angle on Ballerina, with a card-themed game (not necessarily a pinball) on the left...
Director: Otto Preminger. Stars: Frank Sinatra, Kim Novak, Eleanor Parker, Darren McGavin...

Sinatra plays Frankie Machine, arriving home to a run-down Chicago neighborbood, fresh off the bus from a rehab/prison facility, tries to avoid his old life as a skilled card dealer and heroin addict...

Chicago was of course the pinball capital of North America, being home to the giants of the industry, so perhaps it’s normal that one finds a couple of old machines on the sidewalk?! In the opening scene, we can spot a pair of “Majors - 1941” (Chicago Coin, 1941), which were already pretty old by the time the movie was shot...
In Frankie’s hangout bar, there’s a headless machine probably from the early-to-mid 1930s. By about 1936 or so, machines with backboxes (heads) were taking over, even if the heads were often only a few inches tall. It’s hard to identify the actual machine because back in the 1930s, there were so many machines being made... for example, according to the Internet Pinball Database, there were 309 machines made in 1935 alone, by some 54 different companies!
Director: Jules Dassin. Stars: Richard Conte, Valentina Cortese, Lee J. Cobb, Millard Mitchell...

Written by A.I. Bezzerides (based on his novel), who also wrote They Drive By Night (1940), which I featured near the beginning of this blog in this post.

The subject matter is similar... dealing with truckers driving long hours to haul loads as quickly as possible, but this one focuses more on greed and the nasty dealings in the produce industry. I prefer They Drive By Night, but there are a couple of great scenes in this one.

Valentina walks into a restaurant in the market area and we can spot the backboxes of two machines through the window...

Both pinball machines were originally manufactured flipperless. However, since the first flipper machine came out in December 1947 and made flipperless ones obsolete overnight, operators may have retrofitted them with flippers by the time the movie was filmed. It’s impossible to tell from what we can see in the footage.
